It takes 26 seconds for your skin to absorb 60% of what you put on and then it enters into your bloodstream.
Did you know that a lot of what is applied on your skin is absorbed into your body? Specifically, it takes 26 seconds for your skin to absorb 60% of what you put on and then it enters into your bloodstream. No problem, you may think, that’s what you want the products to do. The more the lotion is absorbed into the body, the more hydrated and nourished my skin will be…isn’t that why I am applying this lotion?
Sure, it would be good to have more of the lotion absorbed so that your skin will be moisturized. BUT not if nasty chemicals are being absorbed into your bloodstream too! We don’t want these nasties in our body!
All it takes is 26 seconds for adult. What about babies who have much thinner skin? The Environmental Working Group (EWG) found in 2007 that 77% of ingredients in 1700 children’s skin care products have not been assessed for safety. Everyday, children are exposed to an average of 27 personal skincare ingredients that have not been found safe for children.
Think back to the nasty ingredients we highlighted last month. Many of those named are carcinogens, i.e. increases risk of cancer.
Remember Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulphate (SLES)? They act as a foaming agent to lift dirt off surfaces; so good that they are used as industrial degreasers to clean cars, oily kitchen floors and ovens. Would you want to put something so harsh on your baby’s skin and have the chemicals absorbed into their body?
What about Parabens, often used as a preservative in skincare products? Their use in skincare products for children have been banned in some countries, as it’s a known carcinogen.
And there’s Triclosan and Nitrosamines, which are endocrine disruptors amongst other unwelcome side effects.
All these are made worse with Polyethylene Glycol (PEG) which helps ingredients be absorbed even faster into the skin, especially dangerous on damaged skin, or Propylene Glycol which allows chemicals, even the harmful ones, to enter the skin easily.
Many of these chemicals have been found in human fat and human tumours, proving that they are absorbable. Would you like these nasty ingredients to be absorbed into your baby’s body?
Choose wisely. Find products that do not have nasty chemicals in them, because if they do, there is a high likelihood the chemicals will end up in your baby’s body.
